Wookie or Adam Rich? You decide.

I must urge every man, woman, and small child out there to write to your senators and super-intendents and DEMAND that they finally give this holiday masterpiece a proper release on DVD. As it is now, shoddy third generation dubs are the only means of seeing “The Star Wars Holiday Special” (1978). And that, my good readers, simply will not do! The poor image and sound quality tarnishes what could be the next “It’s a Wonderful Life” - a holiday staple so beloved that it’s aired every year for families to enjoy...forever. The rumors that George Lucas is going to give it the special edition attention (a ‘la the original Star Wars trilogy) with enhanced wookie scenes, Mark Hamill make-up color restoration, and bonus Art Carney material, fill my heart with excitement. People that enjoy all things good and pure in this world should have the opportunity to finally see this remarkable sci-fi music/variety television special.
To try to summarize this great work would simply diminish its towering excellence. Instead, here is a short list of its brilliant moments: incoherent wookie squawking/hilarity, awkwardly re-edited “Star Wars” film footage, a coked-up Carrie Fisher singing the “Life Day” theme, zany high jinx from the precocious Lumpy (Chewbacca’s son who oddly looks exactly like “Eight is Enough” star Adam Rich), a performance by supergroup Jefferson Starship, comical yuks from the irrepressible Harvey Corman (as three different characters!), and showstopping musical dance number from Beatrice Arthur. And if that’s not enough reason, the name of one of the writers is a comedy heavyweight in both girth and intellect. That’s right, the master of mediocrity...Bruce Vilanch. Now run out and buy this puppy on ebay. Unlock the magic!
